Year 1 have been exploring healthy and unhealthy foods in PSHCE, because we all have the right to a balanced diet (UNCRC, article 24). We tasted some unfamiliar fruits and talked about the taste of each, collecting our preferences and then putting this data (information) into a pictogram in our maths lesson. Year 1 have become master shape identifiers! We have been using our knowledge of 3-D shapes to sort them into different groups – sorting the shapes by size, colour and properties. We decided the best way to sort the 3-D shapes was to sort them into round and straight edges – finding shapes which had both round and straight edges in our hoop venn diagrams.read more
Year 1 have been very busy learning about ‘The Commonwealth’ this week. We have learnt about the 53 nations which are part of the Commonwealth and the children were all surprised to find out that our Queen rules over all of them!read more
Despite the weather last week, Year 1 had a super (but soggy!) time visiting Ouseburn farm! We fed and stroked the farm animals and planted our own seeds – there was so much to see and we had a fantastic time, as you can see from our photo slideshow!read more
Last week, our school had a visit from our local All Stars Cricket representative – who told us all about this summers’ exciting scheme!read more
This week in Year 1, we have been exploring TEETH! We borrowed some animal teeth from the Hancock (Great North) Museum and looked at teeth from: a Great White Shark; a mammoth (18 thousand years old!); a Baryonyx dinosaur; an Iguanadon dinosaur; a horse; a sheep; and a Sabre -Toothed Tiger!read more
Year 1 have been VERY excited this week, as we had a delivery of some VERY special chicken eggs – they arrived on Monday, started to wobble on Tuesday, one started to hatch on Wednesday and then when we came into school on Thursday morning 7 had hatched!read more
Before half term, Year 1 started learning about Christopher Columbus – his 3 ships (The Pinta, The Nina and The Santa Maria). Since then, we have investigated materials (and their properties) further and have made our own boats. We tested them and…..every single one of them floated!read more
During the past couple of weeks at after school Art club, the children have been making Valentines hearts using clay. They finished painting and decorating them this week – we hope you agree that they all look fantastic!read more
This week in Year 1, we had a visit from Claire at ESH Construction Company – who told us all about builders and the different careers which are involved in the construction industry! We had the chance to explore and play with different building materials and some of us got the chance to role play some jobs as a quantity surveyor, a builder, a site boss and an architect!read more
In maths this week, Year 1 Holly have been learning about halving and quartering. We explored these mathematical concepts in a fun and practical way – by halving and then quartering some slices of bread!read more
