Miss Critchlow and Mrs Young are our Year 5 teachers, and they are supported by Miss Roddam. Miss Critchlow teaches Year 5 Birch and Mrs Young teaches Year 5 Lime.

To kick start our topic on the Ancient Greeks, we took part in a drama workshop – where we explored the Myths and legends of ancient Greece, including the Gods, Monsters and some of their famous heroes in a fast moving practical drama workshop. Was it a bird? Was it a plane? No it was a Greek Goddess, who came blasting through Elysium into West Lane’s school! Don’t panic through: the detectives of year 5 were quick on the case, investigating the crime scene and collecting the evidence. Today, our school was incredibly proud to have a visit from Olympic British volleyball player Peter Bakare – who led our whole school on a sponsored fitness circuit session. Each class was taken through a series of fun, pulse-raisin,g strength and conditioning exercises, followed by a motivational talk from Peter and a demonstration of some key volleyball skills…read more
Today, our Year 5 and 6 children represented our school at the annual Gateshead Fun Run, sponsored by Intu Metrocentre! The Metrognomes also came along to join in the fun – although one of them was really naughty and decided to try and run off with off with Miss Westgarth’s bag and a packed lunch!read more
On Friday 19th May 2017, Year 5 went to the Great North Museum in Newcastle. During the day, the children had the opportunity to visit the planetarium. They enjoyed two showings: The Dawn of the Space Age and Fragile Planet. The children learnt fantastic facts relating to Earth and Space during these shows..read more
This month, a former pupil of Winlaton West Lane School has kindly ‘donated’ one of his amazing Snowdogs, (‘Gareth’) to our school to exhibit for the next 2-3 weeks! Please feel free to come in and have a look at Mrs Tetley’s new friend…read more
On the last day of Spring term, as part of our ‘Healthy School’ Initiative, our whole school enjoyed a range of activities – including making smoothies with a pupil ‘pedal power’ stationary bike and a workshop with ‘Cooking for Life’ expert Nick!read more
As part of our topic ‘The Ancient Greeks’ this term, Year 5 decided to taste some Greek foods – Greek salad and also some Greek deserts. The children tried a small piece of each food and made notes on how they tasted. This was a fun-filled afternoon and the children really enjoyed exploring Greek culinary tastes!read more
On Wednesday 5th April 2017, Year 5 pupils ran their own mini Olympics in school! The children planned the activities in groups across the year group and a total of 18 events were held throughout the day. The children ran the events themselves and scored them fairly – giving a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner for each event.read more
